Located in Somerset County, Franklin Township is a scenic, quiet town within the Raritan Valley. With a population of 62,300 people, the town is set in what was once a farming community. It is now a fast-growing suburb full of diversity, modern residential areas, and plenty of family-friendly amenities. Like other towns in the area, Franklin was primarily influenced by the Dutch settlers that inhabited it in the mid-1600s. The town is thought to be named after either William Franklin, the Governor of New Jersey from 1762 to 1776, or Benjamin Franklin. Like many towns in the area, it is rich in Revolutionary War History and is home to many historical sites.
When the Delaware-Raritan Canal was built in 1834, it marked a significant development for Franklin Township. This continuous water route from New York to Philadelphia runs right through the township and is a source of drinking water and recreation for area residents. Visitors can access the canal in the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park. The park is a popular spot for boating, kayaking, fishing, and hunting. There are miles of nature trails with plenty of places to take in the gorgeous scenery.
The Franklin Township Public Schools district includes students from pre-K through 12th grade. It is comprised of 10 schools, over 7,000 students, and more than 700 teachers. The Central Jersey College Prep Charter School is also in town, serving students from 6th to 12th grade. Several other private schools are also located nearby.
Franklin Township is just over an hour’s drive from both New York and Philadelphia, making it a prime spot for commuters. Route 287 runs right through the township. There is also bus service in town and easy access to nearby train stations.
