West Long Branch, part of Monmouth County, has been known by many different names throughout New Jersey’s history. It was initially named Hoppersville after the Hopper family. Then Mechanicsville, then Branchburg, and then finally West Long Branch. This name came from the section of the Shrewsbury River on which the town borders. The town was also a part of Eatontown until 1908, when the borough was granted a separation request. The borough spans just under 3 square miles and has a present population of just over 8,000 people.
Besides its rich history and historical sites, West Long Branch has quite a lot to offer. Known as a family-oriented community, the town features newly remodeled community centers, annual events, and plenty of scenic parks for citizens of all ages. There are several walking trails in the area - as well as dog parks, playgrounds, and picnic areas that can be rented for events and parties. There’s also a big emphasis on youth sports, and you can find plenty of tournaments and games on most weekends.
The schools of West Long Branch are highly rated, and students rank highly on state tests year after year. West Long Branch Public Schools serve students from pre-K through 8th grade. For 9th-12th graders, students attend Shore Regional High School, which serves kids from Monmouth Beach, Oceanport, and Sea Bright. For those looking to continue their education after high school, Monmouth University, a private 4-year University, is nearby. The University’s gorgeous Great Hall at Shadow Lawn was featured in the 1982 film Annie.
