South River

A borough in Middlesex County, South River is a charming town along its namesake river. With a population of just over 16,000 and a land area under 3 square miles, the town is on the smaller side with a homey, residential feel. South River was originally part of East Brunswick Township and was known as Washington until its name changed in the late 1800s.

South River is very convenient for commuters and is about an hour’s drive from New York City. The main roads CR535 and CR527 run through town, and Route 18 is nearby. The NJ Transit bus service is also available on two different routes, making it a convenient spot no matter where you work or attend school. A commuter hub in neighboring East Brunswick provides frequent busses and a parking deck dedicated to commuters.

If you have children, you’ll be happy to know that the South River Public Schools are highly rated and serve kids from Kindergarten through 12th grade. With around 2,200 students and 175 teachers, the district offers plenty of enrichment activities and a hearty sports department. Before and after school programs are provided as well. The community is very involved with the schools, and you’ll often see school spirit demonstrated with lawn signs and bumper stickers.

Besides well-run schools, South River is also encouraging young people with their youth leadership programs. High schoolers are welcome to apply for internships that offer excellent learning experiences and impressive credentials for college applications.

Another highlight is the newly launched Beautification Program. This program is dedicated to keeping the community clean and properly maintained for all to enjoy. It includes a tree-planting program that replaces any tree removed from the town with a newly planted one. They’re also working to encourage more sidewalk cafes, which attract visitors from around the area.
