Rumson

Rumson, located in the heart of Monmouth County, is a great little town to live in. With a population of just under 7,000 and a land area of 5 square miles, Rumson has a small beach town vibe but plenty of conveniences. Local legend says that the town’s name comes from early settlers who bought the land from Native Americans in exchange for rum. Although that can’t necessarily be verified, it sure is a fun story and one local love to tell.

History is an integral part of the town, with many 19th century estates lining the shore of both the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers. Once a summer vacation spot for wealthy New York elites, Rumson is now an upscale suburb known for its water sports, unique shops, and restaurants. One of Rumson’s unique features is the historic Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club, which is the oldest active tennis club in the US and has been active for almost 150 years.

Rumson has a lot more to offer than just rich history. Its highly rated school district serves students from pre-K through 8th grade. Older students in 9th-12th grade attend Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, which also serves students in the neighboring town of Fair Haven. Not only are the schools high ranking, but Newsweek rated the RFH as the 144th best high school in the country! That’s 144 out of more than 37,000!

People looking for entertainment won’t have to look far in Rumson. The town is full of locally-owned restaurants, boutiques, cafes, and galleries. The shopping and dining scene attracts visitors from across the state. River Road and East River Road are the sites of the village-esque commercial district where you can find charming general stores like the Rumson Market.
