Bernardsville

Known for its slogan, “small town, big community”, Bernardsville is a borough in Somerset County. The town was originally part of Bernards Township, known as Vealtown. It was renamed in the late 1840s. With a population of around 7,700 people, Bernardsville is full of small-town charm. In fact, its downtown area is carefully maintained by the city and has plenty of locally owned restaurants, boutiques, and cafes. The historical society provides a walking tour of the downtown area as well. There are over 100 historic sites and buildings within Bernardsville; all marked with plaques to explain their significance.

About an hour’s drive from both New York City and Philadelphia, Bernardsville is the perfect spot for families looking for small town living without a complicated commute. There are several major highways with easy access nearby and train stations within neighboring towns.

Bernardsville does not have its own school district, so students from pre-K through 12th grade attend schools in the Somerset Regional School District. Students from several neighboring towns attend the schools as well. The School of Saint Elizabeth is also nearby. The respected institution is a parochial, private school for pre-K through 8th grade. While the district offers many academic and extracurricular activities, team sports are also available through the park district.

The town offers a yearly Farmer’s Market that runs from late spring to early winter. Local lenders offer everything from freshly grown fruits and vegetables, to baked goods and crafts. The town also puts on seasonal events like the annual Cookie Crawl – people throughout the town put cookies in their stores to incentivize people to visit local businesses during a fun event! This is just one example of how Bernardsville is all about family and community. The active town’s residents work together to organize events like this throughout the year.
