Atlantic Highlands is a borough in Monmouth County, in the Bayshore Region. With a population of just under 4,500, Atlantic’s Highlands is the home of Mount Mitchill, the highest point on the eastern seaboard south of Main. This waterfront town has a scenic namesake; it overlooks where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Atlantic Bay at Sandy Hook. In 1667, colonists convened the first Assembly of New Jersey in what is now known as the town. Many retreating English troops passed through the town after losing to George Washington’s army in the 1778 Battle of Monmouth.
Besides its rich history, Atlantic Highlands is known for its beautiful natural scenery. There are several parks and nature paths where you can take it all in. Bike paths are a great way to explore the area, and the town features many of them. The Henry Hudson Trail offers nine miles of paved trail which curves along a former railroad. In addition, many playgrounds are scattered across the town, several of which have been recently updated and restored.
The location of this quaint New Jersey town makes it extremely convenient for commuters looking to get to the city. In fact, New York City is just a short ferry ride away. But you don’t have to go far to have plenty to do in Atlantic Highlands. The town is full of unique boutiques and shops as well as locally-owned restaurants and cafes.

Students from pre-K through sixth grade attend Atlantic’s Highlands Elementary School, while Henry Hudson Regional High School serves students in 7th to 12th grade. The district offers many different programs for students of all grade levels and several popular sporting programs.
