Great Lighthouses to Visit In NJ

When it comes to states with beautiful picturesque shorelines, New Jersey is often overlooked. However, the Garden State is indeed full of gorgeous beaches and stunning lighthouses. Here are some of the best lighthouses to visit in New Jersey.

Barnegat Lighthouse

The Barnegat Lighthouse, or “Barney” as it’s known as to locals, is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island.  It’s 217 steps to the top if you want to make the climb!

Cape May Lighthouse

Located in Cape May Point State Park, the Cape May Lighthouse is one the most visited tourist attractions in the state. This stunning historic tower was built in 1859 and has been open to the public since 1988. Visitors can climb to the very top and explore its visitor’s center museum. For the adventurous, try a Full Moon Climb, where you can take the 199 stairs to the top of the tower and have a one of a kind view of the night sky.

Absecon Lighthouse

Atlantic City is home to New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse and the third tallest lighthouse in the US. Standing at 171 feet tall, the Absecon Lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1857. It has since been through several million-dollar restorations which now feature a replica of the original sleeping quarters of the Lightkeeper, a museum, and a unique gift shop. Visiting the Absecon Lighthouse is not only a historical experience, but you’ll also get a bird’s eye view of the Atlantic City skyline.

Hereford Inlet Lighthouse

Tucked away on the south side of the Hereford Inlet in Wildwood, this Victorian-style lighthouse, built in 1874, was commissioned to prevent shipwrecks caused the strong currents of the inlet. The unique house-style gothic design is the only of its kind on the East Coast, making it a popular spot for visitors looking for the perfect scenic place for their vacation pictures. As if the lighthouse itself isn’t beautiful enough, the grounds are also home to over 200 varieties of flowers in its surrounding cottage gardens.

Whether you’re just visiting New Jersey or have been a lifelong citizen, take time this Spring or Summer to visit these amazing lighthouses.
